ASTHMA TREATMENT

MEDICATION FOR LONG TERM CONTROL

Many people with asthma must take long-term control medicines each day. You take these drugs, even if you do not have symptoms. There are many different medications long-term control.
They are as follows
  • Inhaled corticosteroids :
These anti-inflammatory drugs are most effective and commonly used drugs long-term control of asthma. They reduce swelling and tightening of your airways. You may need these medications for several days to several weeks before reaching their maximum potential. Inhaled corticosteroids are fluticasone (Flovent Diskus, Flovent HFA), budesonide (Pulmicort Flex tails) Mometasone (Asmanex), beclomethasone (QVAR) ciclesonide (Alvesco) In children, prolonged use of inhaled corticosteroids may be slightly delayed growth, but the benefits of using these drugs to maintain good asthma control in general outweigh the risks. Regular use of inhaled corticosteroids can asthma attacks and other problems associated with poorly controlled asthma.
  • Leukotrien modifiers :
These drugs block the effects of leukotrienes, chemicals in the immune system that causes the symptoms of asthma. Leukotriene modifiers can help prevent symptoms by up to 24 hours. Examples include montelukast (Singulair), zafirlukast (Accolate), zileuton (Zyflo, Zyflo CR) In exceptional cases, these drugs have been linked to psychological reactions such as agitation, aggression, hallucinations, depression and suicidal thoughts. Consult your doctor immediately if you have an unusual reaction.
  • Beta-agonists Long-acting  :
These bronchodilator (Brongers-Koh-DIE-lay-back) in medicine open narrowed airways and reduce swelling. Their effects last at least 12 hours, and they are used to manage moderate to severe asthma and to prevent nighttime symptoms. Labas used on a regular schedule with inhaled corticosteroids. Although they are effective, they have been linked to severe asthma attacks. For this reason, beta agonist taken only in combination with an inhaled corticosteroid. Examples of beta agonists long acting include salmeterol (Serevent Diskus), formoterol (Foradil).
  • Theophylline :
You are here bronchodilator in pill form daily for the treatment of mild asthma. Theophylline  relaxes the airways and reduce lung irritant response. It may be useful for asthma symptoms at night. If you are taking theophylline, you may need regular blood tests to make sure you get the right dose. This drug is not used as often today as it once was.
  • Combination inhalers :
Corticosteroids and beta-agonists, two drug combinations against inhaled asthma containing both a corticosteroid and a bronchodilator: fluticasone and salmeterol (Advair) budesonide and formoterol (Symbicort) As for other Labas medicine, these inhalers increase your risk of having a severe asthma attack and should be used with caution.
